Representing Home in Kazan
During my time studying in Kazan, Russia, I often volunteered as an informal guide for Malaysians visiting the city, from university students to official delegations from Malaysia.

The Legendary Whatsapp Forwarded Message
At some point, a simple WhatsApp message started circulating among visitors :
Yes, I was the one who created that list.
What began as helping a few friends quickly evolved into something larger. Whenever Malaysians arrived in Kazan, they needed more than directions. They needed cultural context, halal food recommendations, prayer facilities, transport advice, and reassurance in a foreign country.
Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, where a significant portion of the population is Muslim. The city blends Russian and Tatar heritage, and even observes Eid al-Fitr as a public holiday. Halal food is widely available but knowing which places are authentic, convenient, or suitable for delegations requires local familiarity.
Through exploration with Russian and international friends, I built a practical, field-tested guide covering:
- Key landmarks (Kremlin, Bauman Street, Kremlevskaya Embankment)
- Cultural and architectural sites
- Mosques and prayer spaces
- Reliable halal restaurants
- Transportation tips using Yandex Maps and 2GIS
- Seasonal recommendations (especially winter considerations)
Many of the places listed were not easily found through basic internet searches, especially for visitors seeking halal dining or culturally appropriate spaces.
This experience taught me something simple but powerful:
Representation is responsibility.
When hosting guests from your home country, you do not just show places, you shape their experience of the city.
Coordinating logistics, anticipating questions, managing time, and ensuring comfort for groups with different needs required planning, adaptability, and situational awareness.
It was one of the most memorable parts of my time abroad.
To everyone I had the opportunity to guide or host in Kazan , thank you for the trust.
InshaAllah, our paths will cross again.
If you are reading this post from 2024 onwards. Due check diligence of the places I have mentioned. I have not updated the list since 2023 December. Have a great trip in Kazan!
